Potty Time

The latest issue of _Contemporary Peds_ is all about toilet training.

"Getting kids out of the diaper and onto the toilet!" it proclaims on the cover. Great! (I read it while sitting on the same.)

But really, it just proves to me that pediatricians all think about poop, all the time. Or maybe it's not just us.

I mean, I have a kid who's not two yet. He's a sweetie pie, but he's clearly not ready for toilet training. Do you know how many times my spouse has asked me if Roo is ready for the potty?

Four times in the last four months. Is it time yet? Is it time yet? How about now?

Some of that, I'm sure, is due to a deep distaste for diapers on his part: they're yucky. Not when you put them on-- when you take them off. Plus, there's the leaking problem, and the 'too much poop for diaper to hold' problem, and they're smelly, and and and.

I don't like diapers either, but toilet training can be a prolonged, messy, frustrating business, especially when it's started too soon. Why hurry things along?

Especially since there are very few things in Roo's life that that he-- even smart and well-adjusted as he is, with parents in the business of saying 'yes' whenever possible-- can control. Sleeping, pooping, and eating are the only three I can think of offhand, but I'm sure there's more.

Why not let the kid do things in his own good time? Why make this into a battleground? He'll indicate interest when he's ready. Until then, I can tolerate diapers. The spouse had better learn to, too.
