Meme'd Out.
Oct. 26th, 2004 05:22 pm10 years ago (October 1995), I...
1. Was in the middle of my second full year of undergraduate, after coming home to Ohio from a stint of voluntary service in Winnipeg's North End
2. Met our friend Kent for the first time. :) He didn't have much to say to me, back then.
3. Was struggling with P-Chem, Physics, Calculus, and wondering hard what I was doing, trying to be a chemist, because I wasn't any good at it.
4. Spent most of my time in social situations, either online or off. 20+ MU*'s, I think, plus a plethora of stuff on-campus.
5. Met the boy who became my husband. :)
6. Was in charge of coordinating all the Bible Studies affiliated with the Christian Fellowship at our campus. All of them!
7. Had browbeaten one of the Religious studies teachers into agreeing to teach me koine Greek, and was busily learning the alphabet.
8. Experienced the first death of an older family member whom I was close to.
5 years ago, I...
1. Was in my third year of medical school, stumbling through Surgery and OB-Gyn. Ooogh. ("Some people," my senior resident said, not unkindly, "Are born to be surgeons. Others? Aren't. And you're not.")
2. Had been married for just over a year and was still in the 'must iron his jeans for him' phase.
3. Was wondering what I was doing, planning to be a family practicioner when I hated old people so much, and was beginning to panic that I'd gone to med school for nothing.
4. Got my first honors grade ever in medical school. In surgery, no less.
5. Helped to deliver twins that a mother had waited 17 years to have (infertility), stood in on the delivery of quintuplets, and fainted during the first-ever C-section I saw. Yuck.
3 years ago(Sept-Oct 2001), I...
1. Had just learned I was pregnant and that I (not we) was going to have a baby. (Only one person does the work of labor)
2. Learned which foods, when vomited, taste the same going up as coming down.
3. Could not keep anything down but 3-cheese ricearoni and cheap lemonade (see #2)
4. Was staggering through a sub-internship in the MICU, having mostly made up my mind that no, I didn't really WANT to deal with adults' health problems in my professional life.
5. Saw an 80 year old man die from epistaxis (nosebleed). Participated in withdrawing care on several older individuals. Watched the flesh-eating strep eat the legs off of a 40 year old man, and watched as he slid into psychologic shock after the orthopedics guys took both of his legs off at the hip joints.
6. Took all FP residencies off my interview list (see #5), and got my first residency interview invitation, to Salt Lake City, in October 2001.
1 year ago, I...
1. Was adjusting to the demands of a new 'role' in residency. It's different to be the go-to guy. Girl. Whatever.
2. Was enjoying my child's growth from baby into toddlerhood.
3. Was rediscovering the joy of beads-- right about this time last year, someone gave me a very cool beaded lanyard, and that was the end.
4. Was doing a lot more writing than I am doing right now. :)
So far this year, I...
1. Am trying to be true to myself, and simultaneously be a good mother, wife, and physician.
You all can leave me a comment and let me know how it's going. :)
