Sadness.

Look, I realise I don't have to clicky thingy on any links, okay?

And that I did, and that I found someone ranting against all doctors, the medical profession as a whole, and making blanket statements that all doctors are shits who want to rape you up the ass just to get more money shouldn't hurt me.

But it does.

I work very hard to be as good a physician as I can be. I work at it every day. I study every day. I bust my gonads to be a good physician.

Comments about how you hate all doctors are not appreciated by me, a doctor.

I realise I shouldn't have clicked the clicky thingy on someone's rant about medicine.

Regardless.

If you're likely to put up posts like that on a usual basis, about how all doctors suck, and how we're all out to get you, please drop me a line. I can unfriend you and go about my day without crying for 15 minutes and then having a terrible 'whopped in the stomach' feeling for the rest of the day.

ETA: I'm actually okay with 'my doctor sucks and here's why'. Honest. Just not blanket statements that all physicians suck and are out to get you.

It would be like me saying, "I hate all writers, because they're all pretentious."

Alternatively, if I see a lot of 'all doctors suck' blanket statements made, you may get unfriended anyway.

Isn't one enough? Don't your friends already have a clue what you do?

It's probably partially my fault for clicking a rant that said 'medical stuff ensues' or something like that, only in more negative terms.

And I'm *okay* with people saying 'I'm not happy with my doctor', or 'I'm really not happy with the state of healthcare today because it's broken'.

I know I shouldn't take it personally, but still. I can't help it.

Ahm, no, not your fault.

I couldn't do what you do. I've told you that before. It takes more guts and courage to get through one of your days than most people need to muster up for an entire lifetime at their job.

There are crappy doctors out there, I've had a couple myself. But there are also crappy teachers, lawyers, bankers and accountants. It is not right or fair to paint an entire profession as corrupt or selfish or anything else.

You are still my hero, Dr. Stella. Don't let the bastards get you down. *hug*

[identity profile] jmeadows.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't one enough?

Would be for me. But, you know, Stella's nicer than either of us.

[identity profile] chance88088.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh you know sometimes people have bad days or weeks with doctors. Sometimes people lapse into generalities they don't mean. (Or they mean at the moment because they are angry.)

[identity profile] chance88088.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
(i'm not so much defending the person who said what they said, but really when my mom had her brain surgery, she had a whole lot of assy doctors in a row, and well that kind of thing puts you to the breaking point, because you are afraid mostly and the person you think should be helping you is acting like an ass.)

[identity profile] ccfinlay.livejournal.com 2005-07-23 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true. But when people are hurt by something, even if it's unintentional, it's also okay for them to step away from the cause of the hurt. There's no need to think twice about it. (Or dwell on it either.)

*soothes you from afar*

Absolutists absolutely suck.

Broad-sweeping statements are usually blood-pressure-raising.

You rock, Dr. Stella.

Er, and that was from me. *eyes LJ*

I'm really happy with my current doctor and physical therapist. Although I still think my insurance company sucks big black donkey [censored].

[identity profile] porphyrin.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And even if you're not happy with your doctor, that's cool too. I just-- resent blanket statements.

It would be like me saying, "All anime fans suck. Every last one of them, including you, and I'm putting this in a forum where you, a friend and anime fan, are likely to come across it."

I truly do not hate all doctors (that'd be sad, then I'd have to hate myself once I got through med school....ok...that would just be bad.) anyway. But I do hate some doctors. Doctors who can't be bothered to listen to their patients, or who are more interested in bragging about how many times they've done a procedure. Yeah. I hate them. Doctors who change records, or lie, or try to pretend that they know what they're talking about when they're in a situation that is beyond their control. Yeah - I hate them.

BUT. I LOVE and ADORE all doctors who take time with their patients. Who listen to their patients. Who care. Who bust their buns trying to make sure that they are the best doctors they can be. I LOVE those. and in my mind, even though I haven't seen you in practice, I pay attention to the way you talk about your day at work, the kids you've seen, and some of the insights you've given in other topics, and can't imagine but that you would be one of the doctors that I love and adore :):):):)

What a shit thing to say. It's a dumb, vicious, cruel blanket statement and you have every right to be upset and unfriend them. If they feel that way, they'd better be okay with never getting in an accident or getting ill, that's all I have to say. Let them treat their own ignorant selves for a while and see how THAT works out.

{{{HUGS}}}

I've got my stompy boots on. I know you're too nice to dispatch me with them, but I'm just saying.

And I got this karate kick thing going on, in case you need stomp on someone's head who lives a bit further to the east. :)

Honey, my heiney has been saved and a half by MANY doctors, and MANY nurses, and a handful of residents and students. So I am just going to sit here in the Gratitude Corner and wave my banner on behalf of all those people, and you.

I can so identify

[identity profile] one-undone.livejournal.com 2005-07-23 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I get the same sort of deal, except that I'm a nurse, and I'm sick and tired of people assuming I'm a nurse because I must be "too stupid to be a doctor" (and yes, people who don't even know me have said things like that). I have saved numerous doctor asses because I was being thorough and doing the best I could do at my job, and have had those same doctors write me up for insubordination, and it infuriated me. One in particular was a doctor who used to be a nurse and when I asked her why she did it, when she knew I was doing something to make up for the fact that she fumbled the ball, she said it was because she had been a nurse and that's not how SHE would have handled it, so I must be wrong and should be "disciplined" for "trying to act like I knew better than a doctor."

I've had so many bad doctor experiences...and they all make me cherish and value the good doctors I find. No segment of any population is being treated fairly when people rag them all in blanket statements. Yes, people do it. Sometimes they even mean it. But it hurts. Everytime I read some comment like "well she's a nurse, what do you expect, you know she doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground without a doctor telling her so" I could just boot someone in the eye. Take comfort in knowing that there are those of us out here who don't want you hurting, and who value medical professionals, and who understand. Sorry you had to go through that today.

::hugs::

Statements declaring 'all doctors suck' have about as much merit as statements deifying all doctors. That is to say, none at all (though the former gets you riled vs. validated). Reacting to them is pointless, because they probably aren't aimed at you. For instance, that'd be like me getting bent out of shape at someone yelling 'all engineers are socially inept and doomed to be single' when it's widely known and heralded that I'm a pimp.

At your most indulgant, you look at such statements to find out where the source of the frustation stems. Otherwise, ignore 'em.

And while I'm somewhat late to the party and this appears resolved, realize that Ranter has the utmost personal respect for you. Trust me on this one.

You're almost there, baby. Keep your chin up.

::hugs:: dearie.

I get frustrated too when people generalize about how the healthcare system sucks, and that the providers are all so horribly incompetent and bureaucratic.

They just fear what they don't understand.
