I just like that word.

I've been doing a LOT of that kind of stitching lately.

Especially on ankles and faces.

Regarding ankles:  Please consider getting the kind of bike pedal that *doesn't* have sharp metal teeth on it?  Last night alone there were four ankle injury/bike accidents that required multiple stitches for gaping wounds.

Regarding faces:  if you have a toddler, be aware that there's nothing you *can* do except _be_ aware.

*sigh*

Heh, grownups too. I recently did my turn as the Safety Committee person at work - we rotate it through all the managers. One of the things I had to do was go back through all the accidents this year and go over them with the committee (it had somehow been overlooked by the previous managers - one of the problems with rotation I guess).

Anyway, more than half of the 'corrective actions' for the accidents were "employee needs to be more aware of his/her surroundings". I recommended we get a banner that reminds people to "Be Aware of Your Surroundings". It actually got approved, and the banner is on the way, but I don't know how much good it will do, honestly. Some people just don't get the concept of 'being aware'.

While we never had to get anything stitched on my siblings, we did consider just making them wear motorcycle helmets at all times for protective purposes.

The human toddler has few natural enemies, except the coffee table.

Are you using wound glue? I love it when the wound's appropriate, but I'm sad that the vast majority of wounds aren't.

We went through a 'use glue on everything!' phase about 3 years ago, when I was starting internship.

These days, it's 'use glue on almost nothing!', for various reasons. I like it, too, but many of the Peds ED attendings don't.

I suspect their dislike has to do with a couple of forehead & eyebrow lacerations where the eyelid actually got glued shut by a suture nurse...

One of the problems with glue is that the original formulation is extremely runny, and tends to run everywhere. There's a new gel formulation which is supposed to address that problem, but my ER has yet to stock it.

Using a bacitraicin 'dam' to contain the spillage also helps, a trick I learned from some HCMC physicians.

Still.

Eyes Glued Shut.

That doesn't sound like fun to me, and we don't have the gel formulation yet, either.

I dunno, even if you get a non-clawed bike pedal there are still plenty of gougy bits.

I'd worry about feet slipping off the pedals while in motion, without the clawy bits. Unless you want to get clips or something.

(Er. Not that all clawy bits are metal, 'course.)

it is a nice word

I like the autokey trigger I created for it in my word processor too: scuti. When I type scuti it expands to subcuticular. I think something should be named scuti. It sounds fun. Maybe even more fun than subcuticular.

I'd love to learn suturing. Maybe someday.
