Schoolwork. Black Sheep.

Today Robin came home and handed me a bunch of papers.

One of them was folded into quarters, unfolded, and the numbers 1 through 4 were written in various quadrants, with pictures in each quadrant.

"We're drawing numbers," he says offhandedly.

"What's this?"

"That's one box, and that's two big boxes."

"And those are three what?"

"Happy people." He is so matter of fact. "And those are four eyeballs that don't work very well to see the TV with."

I shuffle through the papers and find one with a heart and an arrow 'stitched' through it. "This says 'I love you.'"

"Yeah. That's from Avagail."

I blink. "Because she's happy to see you back at school?"

"Yeah, AND she says she loves me and that she's going to marry me and live in the same house with me." He rolls his eyes, sounding disgusted at this idiocy. "But really I'm going to live with my sister to take care of her."

Meanwhile, Lillian is giving 'baa baa black sheep' her full attention. She's trying to sing-- or say-- ba ba black sheep. It comes out 'ba ba baaaaaweeeeEEEEEE'.

"But really I'm going to live with my sister to take care of her."

I am fascinated by this. I wish we could tell whether he felt like Lillian was always going to need the level of care she does now, or whether he felt like Lillian would always be a few steps behind him and therefore need him to take care of her, or what.

(I suspect that several other big siblings I know would protest that their younger sibs really do need taking care of still.)

There's something very cool about that--I think that he's still thinking of himself as the one taking care of people, not as someone who should have things rearranged so he can be cared for.
