So as it turns out, the toilet can't be installed on the first floor just yet.
It'll take over 10 grand of plumbing work to install a toilet on the first floor.
Why?
The feed's been filled with concrete.
The plumbers will have to re-pipe everything down to the main sewer line, which is hidden in the wall of the house, and that means ripping out that wall, down in the basement. That's one of the laundry room walls.
As Joe, the plumber, said, "Better get a loan from Bill Gates."
Joe, the plumber, was kind enough to take a look at the hot water heating system. When someone says, in various tones of indignation and ire, "That's not up to code!" and "They got that from Menard's and did it themselves, and lookit what happened-- yah, right there--" about six times in one minute, that's not good either.
If the previous occupants of this house weren't already dead, I'd kill 'em.

Date: 2005-09-20 08:32 pm (UTC)First off - yes, housing projects tend to domino like that. Like the simple little fact that we'd like to remove the cloth-like wallpaper from the main first-floor bathroom. But pretty much everything - cabinets, molding, toilet, decorative told - is on top of said wallpaper. Which makes me realize why the previous homeowners redid most every room BUT that bathroom (and the master bath). Oftentimes even simple replacements (especially with plumbing and electric) rack up the $$, because you're replacing old plumbing/wiring with new stuff that has to be up to a certain spec which wasn't in effect 20-odd years ago...
Yeesh. Sometimes I wanna rent again.
But that said... some of the stuff (like the quality of the hot water system) should have been caught during your home inspection, or did you waive inspection?
